Product Overview

This is a comprehensive collection of some of the scarcest banknotes issued by the Bank of Canada over the past 70 years. As banknotes are printed for the Bank of Canada, they are carefully accounted for by the serial numbers. If a sheet of notes is imperfect or damaged in the printing process, typically about one of every 500 to 1,000 sheets, it is "replaced" and accounted for with a special series of "replacement notes."

On all 1954 series notes and the 1967 $1, an asterisk was used in front of the serial number to designate a replacement note. In the multicolour series notes, an asterisk was used to show it was a replacement note, however when the triple digit notes were introduced, an "X" was introduced on some denominations as the third letter of the serial number prefix to show that it is a replacement note. On the 11-digit 1979 $20 series, replacement notes are designated by the first three digits "510." On the Bird Series (1986–1991), the third digit "X" in the prefix indicates that it is a replacement note.

Most replacement notes are highly sought-after today and command a very significant collector premium. This collection starts with the complete 1954 replacement note series from the $1 to the $20. (Denominations above $20 did not use asterisk replacement notes. Instead, the banknote company reprinted the exact serial numbers for damaged notes.) For the 1969 to 1975 multicolour series, asterisk notes are included for all denominations from the $1 to the $100, plus "X" replacement notes for the $1, $10, $50, $100 denominations. A 1979 "510" $20 note is included, as well as the complete 1986 to 1991 Bird Series collection of "X" replacement notes from the $2 to the $1,000.
