Product Overview

This is a low mintage 1977 Canadian business strike $1 dollar coin in near perfect condition, independently graded, certified and sealed by ICCS as superb gem uncirculated MS-66. This is one of the finest known ultra-high grade examples of one of the scarcest low mintage dates of Canada's nickel dollar series.

Starting in 1968, Canada's $1 coins struck for circulation were produced in pure nickel and distributed through the banking system in limited quantities. One of the lowest mintage dates is 1977, with a mintage of just under 1.4 million. This coin is highly sought after not only for the low mintage, but also since the voyageur design used in 1977 is a one year type, with a reduced size voyageur design and the legend in small lettering much further from the rim than on other date issues.

During this era, business strike coins were shipped to the banks in large canvas bags of $1000 face value where the coins would typically rub and bang against each other during shipping. The result of this is that the vast majority of dollar coins of this era have numerous contact marks on them, and would be considered typical uncirculated.  The few coins that have managed to survive in near perfect condition are highly prized collectibles today, and valued at much higher price than typical coins.

For the collector of superb Canadian coins, coins are broken down into various grades of uncirculated. Since an uncirculated coin simply means that it never went into circulation, it will usually still have marks and imperfections as a result of being handled at the mint or being shipped in canvas bags with other coins. The coins which are in the very highest uncirculated conditions are usually extremely rare. The grade and authenticity of the coin is often "certified" by an independent third party grading service.

This coin has been graded as MS-66(or Superb Gem Uncirculated) by ICCS, the leading independent third party grading service in Canada. To meet this grade, the coin must be unusually well struck with a virtually flawless appearance and no signs of handling or wear, with full mint lustre. Historically, it has been these highest quality coins which have increased most in value over time.
