Gifts of Diamonds

Product Overview

Following the success of the renewed silver dollar series (2015-present), and the conclusion of the renewed silver half-dollar series (2017-2020), this introduces a new annual event that shifts the focus to a different denomination: Canada's $2 circulation coin, better known as the "toonie". In 2021, Canada's bi-metallic $2 coin turned 25! To mark the occasion, this retrospective series began with a reproduction of the 2006 anniversary tribute to the toonie's polar bear mascot since 1996. The design has been renewed and upgraded on this collectible, which combines 99.99% pure silver and selective gold plating to capture the look of the famous bi-metallic coin. This is the first in a forthcoming series.  As a product struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt and comes with a serialized certificate.

The coin's reverse is a reproduction of the 2006 $2 commemorative circulation coin design by Canadian artist Tony Bianco. It is a variation of the Arctic-themed design that debuted 10 years prior in 1996, and shows the polar bear gazing up at the Aurora Borealis. The addition of selective gold plating captures the distinctive look of the bi-metallic circulation coin, which features the words "Canada" and "2 Dollars"" on its reverse. The obverse is double dated ("1996 · 2021") to mark the 25th anniversary of the $2 circulation coin, and features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Anniversary Edition: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Canada's $2 circulation coin and its polar bear mascot! To mark the occasion, your coin's reverse features a 2006 variation of the Arctic-themed design that debuted in 1996.
Precious Metal Upgrade: The combination of 99.99% pure silver and selective 99.99% pure gold plating recreates the distinctive colour contrast that makes this bi-metallic $2 coin so unique. It's an enhanced version of the original, and nearly twice its size, too!
Very Low Mintage: With an exceptionally low mintage of just 2,500 worldwide, this coin will be a highly sought-after addition to any collection.

Did you know?
• This was one of two designs that appeared on the $2 circulation coins in 2006. Both were designed by Tony Bianco, but the first one resembled the original design introduced in 1996, while this version features an updated pose and the aurora borealis.
• How did the polar bear get its name? In 2006, the Royal Canadian Mint held a "name our polar bear" contest! Churchill was the first-place winner with 34% of the 166,635 votes cast, and it's a fitting name as a reference to the northern Manitoba community that is famous for polar bear watching. The runners-up names were Wilbert (26%) and Plouf (15%).
•The coin features selective gold plating and fine silver, but every one is minted with a patented mechanism that keeps the outer ring and the inner core locked together.
