Product Overview
This collection includes five genuine historic bronze rings, dating from the first century BCE through to the 18th century. While every ring is unique, the five rings have been selected to present a broad spectrum of time and styles from ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire, the medieval era, and early modern era. A certificate of authenticity is included with the set of five rings.
Apart from personal adornment, some early rings were also functional. They were used as a form of personal identification much like a signature would be used today. Lead or wax would be melted and dripped onto a surface, then the signet ring impressed onto it. As literacy spread throughout the empire, this functional role diminished in importance except for ceremonial purposes; however, signet rings with initials and other designs have continued to be used right up to the present.
