September-Issue 1999 Quarter No Denomination Mule Error PCGS Certified MS66

This Gem Uncirculated 1999 quarter features a very rare major error with no denomination on the coin. The coin has been independently graded and certified as MS-66 by the Professional Coin Grading Service, the world's largest and most respected independent coin-certification company.  

One of the rarest and most sought-after of all error coins is sometimes referred to as a "mule." These coins are created when the obverse die intended for one coin is accidentally paired with the reverse die intended for a different coin.

When the millennium commemorative designs were introduced for the 1999 quarters, the denomination "25 cents" was moved from the reverse to the obverse, and a smaller portrait of Queen Elizabeth was used. All 1999 quarters issued for circulation feature this new modified obverse design and all commemorative collector issues were supposed to have the new design.

While the Royal Canadian Mint was producing 1999 commemorative quarters, they also produced some caribou quarters for collector sets. As in previous years, the caribou quarters had the date on the reverse and the larger portrait of the queen. By mistake, a mint worker mixed an obverse die intended for caribou quarters and paired it with a September 1999 commemorative quarter reverse die. A small number of coins struck by these dies were unknowingly put into the 1999 commemorative quarter collections sold by the mint.
