This collection includes three near perfect proof-like quality original silver dollars dated from 1963, 1964 and 1965. Each coin has been selected as a superb gem quality example of the collector issue silver dollars from the Royal Canadian Mint in each years. While initial mintages of these coins were fairly high, a large percentage of the silver coins, including collector issues, were melted down for their bullion value from the late 1960s to the early 1980's when silver approached $50 per ounce; the number of coins available for collectors today is significantly reduced. All three coins in the collection feature superb sharp designs with a mirror finish. The 1963 and 1964 coins feature the original "young portrait" of Queen Elizabeth. Starting in 1965, a more mature effigy of the Queen replaced the young portrait.
• 1963 and 1965: The main design on these dollar coins is the same that was on Canada's first dollar coin, issued in 1935. It features a Native Canadian and a Voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company) paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind swept trees. The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights.
• 1964: This coin marks the 100th anniversary of the meetings in 1864 held in Charlottetown, PEI and Quebec City; these meetings resulted in the formation of Canada as a country in 1867. The design on the coin depicts emblems of four of the country's founding ethnic groups: French, Irish, Scottish and English. (the French fleur-de-lis, the Irish shamrock, the Scottish thistle, and the English rose.)
