Product Overview

This set of two original Chinese "cash" coins includes one coin dating from the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127), and one from the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). This classic type of cash coin was in use in China for more than 2,000 years. Today, surviving cash coins dating from ancient times to a little over a century ago provide collectors with a tangible link to the history of China and a unique opportunity to hold money used in long-past eras. They can also be used as talismans to invite luck and wealth into the home.

The four characters on the front of the coin represent the name of the dynasty, the name of the emperor, where the coin was produced and the denomination. Each coin features a round shape with a square hole in the centre. As this was the only denomination widely available for commerce, larger transactions were often facilitated using large quantities of coins pre-counted on a string running through the centre hole. Amazingly, the general design of Chinese cash coins remained largely unchanged for nearly two millennia.

Includes:
• Cash Coins from the Northern Song and Qing Dynasties, 960–1911
