USA Indian Head $2.50 Gold Coin 1908–1929

This original United States Liberty Head $2.50 gold coin is dated from 1908 to 1929, and is a premium-quality example of the coinage which fuelled the expansion of American commerce and industry. Coins like this circulated widely through the United States until 1933 when, in the depths of the Great Depression and financial crisis, president Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order which made private gold ownership illegal. Only in late 1974 was lawful private ownership of gold restored. While many coins like this were redeemed in 1933 and were melted down by the government, some coins have survived to today and have become both fascinating collectibles and time capsules of an era gone by. 

The design on this coin is both unusual and highly revered by collectors. Unlike any American coin before, the design is incuse, allowing for intricate detail while still leaving a flat surface to the coin. The obverse features an image of an Indigenous man wearing a headdress and facing left. Thirteen stars line each side of the image, with six on the left and seven on the right. Below lies the date, and above, the word "Liberty." 

On the reverse, the coin features a standing eagle. The national bird stands on a bunch of arrows with an olive branch in its left talon. To the left of the arrowheads is a mint mark, if produced other than at the Philadelphia Mint. Inscriptions on the reverse include "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust," and the denomination, "2 1/2 dollars."
