Product Overview

This high-quality silver grosso coin dates to about 750 years ago at an important turning point for what was then the city-state of Venice. This was a time when Venice was beginning to assert its economic and political power as the Byzantine Empire was beginning to crumble. Grosso coins like this were of high quality, and maintained amazing stability over several hundred of years. Its name is from the same root as groschen and the English groat, all deriving ultimately from the denaro grosso ("large penny"). This coin was struck in Venice during the late medieval era, and features the ruler with St. Mark on one side and Christ enthroned on the other.
