Product Overview
The design by Canadian artist Darlene Gait features a portrait of Sioux Valley Dakota Chief Wanduta. His tradition regalia is exquisitely detailed with the use of a full colour application over engraving. The texture of the eagle feathers in the headdress and the coloured beads are woven in a geometric design on the headband. A treaty medal hangs around Wanduta's neck in a display of his peaceful intentions and a reminder of alliances with the British.
It is engraved with the word "CANADA," the date "2016", and the denomination "50 dollars". As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, it is GST/HST Exempt.

About Dakota Spiritual Healer and Elder - Wanduta
Upon his return from a journey to Ottawa in January 1903, Wanduta was arrested by Farming Instructor E.H Yeomans and charged with hosting a dance involving give away merchandise and horses, which is contrary to section 114 of the Indian Act. He was brought before police magistrate R. Lyons, with the trail taking place in a hotel room, since Griswold Manitoba did not have a courtroom. Records do not indicate whether Wanduta was given a translator or have his son present at the trial. With no witnesses and without legal counsel, the trial was very brief. The Magistrate indicated that Wanduta admitted guilt and he administered his verdict. He was sentenced to four years of hard labour and imprisonment.
Many Dakota were attending the Rapid City Annual Fair and were angered to hear of the verdict. They sought out the businessman (Malcolm Turriff) that had invited them to present their ceremonial dance, who in turn took immediate steps to rectify the situation; however it was to no avail. The Dakota decided to fight back, when the protests of Mr. Turriff failed.
They travelled to Brandon Manitoba and retained lawyer George Coldwell in an effort to free Wanduta and to speak on behalf of their community to enforce their right to follow traditional ways. Coldwell included a long letter outlining a number of arguments for the Minister of the Interior, Clifford Sifton in Ottawa, to exercise "executive clemency" in order to secure the release of Wanduta. Despite the valiant attempt, all efforts were thwarted; a letter to this end arrived just days before Wanduta served his entire sentence.
