This huge collection includes 100 historic Canadian silver dollars, all dating from 62 to 87 years ago. The coins include the first year of issue in 1935 through to 1960. In addition to their collector value, this 100-piece group contains 60 ounces of pure silver. At least one of each date of issue other than 1945, 1947 and 1948 are included, with multiples for most dates. (Note that no silver dollars were issued from 1940 to 1944.)
Many silver coins were melted down for their bullion value from the late 1960s to the early 1980s when silver approached $50 per ounce, so the number of surviving coins available for collectors today is significantly reduced. Coins will range from mid-grade very fine condition to uncirculated.
Voyageur Silver Dollar Design
The regular-issue design for most of the included coins features an Indigenous person and a voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company), paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind-swept trees, with vertical lines in the background representing the Northern Lights.
Commemorative Issues
The 1939, 1949 and 1958 coins are all special-issue commemoratives. The 1939 issue marks the royal visit of King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), and features the Canadian parliament buildings. The 1949 issue marks Newfoundland joining Canadian Confederation and features the ship the Matthew in which John Cabot arrived in Newfoundland in 1497. The 1958 dollar marks both the caribou gold rush and British Columbia becoming a crown colony in 1858.
