Product Overview
This spectacular diamond- and emerald-encrusted $250 coin is one of the most elegant and sought-after issues ever from the Royal Canadian Mint, and is rarely available to collectors. Issued in 2016 to mark the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the coin beautifully combines rarity and elegance. The design features elements of the Queen’s Vladimir Tiara, comprised of 29 high-quality genuine Canadian diamonds and a large cabochon emerald. The coin itself has a weight of nearly two ounces of pure gold, and the total diamond weight is close to one carat. The mintage is just 125 coins—this coin sold out immediately from the mint when issued.
The Royal Canadian Mint collaborated with renowned jeweller Steve Thompson (Thompson S. D. Jewellers, Ltd.) in order to incorporate precious stones into the minting process. The tiara’s iconic circular design is further expressed in the delicately engraved motif that forms the coin’s outer ring: a total 90 circles to honour the Queen on her 90th birthday. This historic celebration is also highlighted in the coin’s unique double date (1926–2016).
