Product Overview

This about uncirculated $100 Confederate note dates from 1864 and is a high-quality collectable from one of the most turbulent times in American history. It is authenticated and certified by independent third-party grading service PCGS Banknote as Choice About Uncirculated 58.

The design features three separate vignette images. At the left is a depiction of two Confederate soldiers with rifles. At the right is an image of George W. Randolph, who was a Confederate general and the Secretary of War during the American Civil War. The central vignette features Lucy Pickens, who was only woman to appear on Confederate currency. Pickens has been referred to as the Queen of the Confederacy. Wife of Francis Wilkinson Pickens, the secessionist governor of South Carolina on the eve of the Civil War, Lucy was a popular socialite who actively supported secession.

The inscription on the banknote reads, "Two years after ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States of America will pay to the bearer on demand one hundred dollars."

In 1864, the banknotes represented a promise to pay in hard currency, which would have been gold or silver coinage. After the defeat of the South, these notes became unredeemable.  While this was a huge loss to the note holders of the time, this also allowed for many examples to be saved, and makes it possible for collectors today to own a genuine piece of American history.
