Product Overview

Subtly chic, this Grace Kelly - Princess of Monaco Collection necklace features eye-catching stations of printed glass on an anchor chain for a slender accent piece.

Always on the lookout for jewellery that’s above and beyond the norm, Grace knew one fabulous source was the House of Chanel. Beginning in the 1920s, Chanel could be counted on for exotic accessories found nowhere else—not just in design, but also in the use of materials. Chanel was well known for its use of designs taken from common items, such as paper clips and doorknobs.

In the case of this necklace, which was originally made in the 1930’s, Coco Chanel designed the shape, chain design and spacing for the elements of this necklace. What made it different was the material used to fill the main hexagon elements. It was glass filled with stones made from the paving blocks used in the streets of Paris. The street in front of her boutique was being ripped up and she had her young assistant take some of the old block stones to their workshop a few blocks away. The stones were beaten with a hammer to make small stones, then imbedded in glass made from broken wine bottles. When cooled, the face was polished on both sides.
