Product Overview

1939 to 1945 represents one of the most tumultuous time in world history, as Canada and most of the world mobilized and participated in the Second World War. More than a million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in uniform, both at home and around the world; over 45,000 of our brave men and women in uniform gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded. While most Canadian coinage continued to be issued during this time, production of the silver dollar was suspended from 1940 to 1944, and changes were made to the composition of five-cent coin.

This 37-coin collection includes coins from the beginning of World War II in 1939, to the end of the war in 1945. Each set (by year) is presented in a custom display case. The 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent and dollar coins are all struck in .800 fine silver, while the cent is struck in the normal copper of the era. The five-cent for 1942 and 1943 is a special war-issue coin—it is struck in a brass alloy called tombac, as nickel was needed for the war effort. The nickels struck in 1944 and 1945 are war-issue coins made of steel with a chromium plating. The designs on the 1943, 1944 and 1945 nickels feature a large "V" which is both the roman numeral for five and the symbol for victory. All of the coins bear the effigy of King George VI, who appeared on Canadian coins from 1937 to 1952.
