The dugong is the largest living herbivorous marine mammal and a close relative of the manatee. These sea mammals can live 60 years or more, measure up to three metres in length, weigh up to 500 kilograms, and feed on plant species found on the ocean floor. Although the dugong can be found at times across 40 countries and territories throughout the Indo-West Pacific, it is on the endangered species list due to modern fishing methods and the environmental degradation of the marine environment.
The dugong is largely dependent on seagrass communities for subsistence and is thus restricted to the coastal habitats which support seagrass meadows, with the largest dugong concentrations typically occurring in wide, shallow, protected areas such as bays, mangrove channels, the waters of large inshore islands and inter-reefal waters. The northern waters of Australia between Shark Bay and Moreton Bay are believed to be the dugong's contemporary stronghold.
