Product Overview

Innovation and advances in mintage technology have made it possible for the Royal Canadian Mint to issue this first ever fine silver coin that utilizes ultra-high relief on both sides. Struck in over 100 grams (3.25 ounces) of fine silver with a 50mm diameter, this $50 coin captures the essence of the Dragon in a way never seen before on a Canadian coin.

According to Chinese astrology, 2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon, bringing with it the promise of growth, progress, creativity and good fortune. Framed by a wood pattern, the powerful creature is brought to life by Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) that lifts the finely detailed relief to an incredible height of 4.7 mm. The Royal Canadian Mint’s R&D team then went one step further, elevating the extraordinary by providing an obverse rear view (also engraved in Extraordinarily High Relief) of that same scene, where the engraving rises up to 3.85 mm to give the dragon a more three-dimensional form within the two-sided design.

Framed by a laser-engraved pattern that represents the wood element, the dragon moves among the clouds in a night sky illuminated by the moon, its tail coiled to form the shape of the lucky number 8. The observe is a rear view of the same scene, with an added cameo effect effigy of Queen Elizabeth II at the top.

Those born between February 10, 2024 and January 28, 2025 will fall into the Year of the Dragon, as will those born in 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940 and 1928.
