2024 $200 Pure Gold Coin, Topsail Schooner Tall Ship

Travel back to the era of the tall ships, which were the backbone of Canada’s marine industry through much of the 19th century. This low mintage, 2024 half-ounce $200 fine gold coin features a topsail schooner traversing calm waters.  

Distinguished by the square sails on its foremast, the topsail schooner on this coin is a striking example of the sail plan that made this type of tall ship both strong and nimble. The rigging allowed these two or more masted vessels to carry more sail when sailing off the wind. More importantly, the square topsails provided an increased sail area for more speed. Combined with fore and aft sails, this made the ships easier to maneuver in heavy seas, an important consideration for coastal trading in the 1800s.

The obverse features the posthumous transitional effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, including the double dates of reign 1952-2022.
