Product Overview

With a huge diameter of 110 mm (4.33 inches), this impressive five-ounce, fine-silver, one-dollar coin makes a perfect canvas to showcase a fascinating piece of Canada's coinage history. Combining a low mintage, a popular denomination and first-ever new innovative minting technology, the coin is likely to be one of the most sought-after issues of 2024.

The story behind this coin dates back to 1938 when renowned artist Emanuel Hahn created a sketch for a 1939 silver dollar that would mark the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Hahn's design was adopted and issued as the first silver dollar of Canada to feature a design other than the voyageur, while his original sketch was archived and preserved in the National Currency Collection of the Bank of Canada.

After 85 years, the Royal Canadian Mint has taken Hahn's sketch and re-created it on this new 2024 large-format five-ounce fine silver coin. An art card showing a printed reproduction of the original sketch is also included. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King George VI, as appeared on the original 1939 silver dollar.
