Product Overview

This exquisite 2024 $20 fine silver coin combines the rarity and beauty of ammolite—one of Canada's rarest and most spectacular gemstones—with the magic of motion, which shows off its iridescent and dynamic colours. This is the first coin in a new series themed as "Elements of Air," and features an ammolite stone with a predominant yellow colour. Genuine Canadian ammolite is mounted and housed in a 3D frame fashioned by Canadian-owned-and-operated Beverly Hills Jewellers. The special jewellery mount allows the ammolite to move and flash its colour with the slightest movement of the coin base. Enhanced with selective gold plating, the design features an array of line art patterns that visually convey motion and evoke the sense of an ever-changing wind. This swirling representation of air rises as it surrounds the centre ammolite. The obverse is one of the last coins to feature the posthumous effigy of Queen Elizabeth.

Ammolite is an opal-like organic gemstone found primarily along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is made of fossilized shells of ammonites dating back to over 70 million years ago. The iridescent gemstone can have a wide range of colours, varying from reds and greens to blues, violets and yellow. The patterns can also range from solid colours to intricate designs resembling flames, watercolour paintings or even stained glass. Some Indigenous peoples have referred to ammolite as the "Buffalo Stone," the "Energy Stone," "Spirit Stone," or "Seven-Colour Prosperity Stone."

Ammolite is also the official gemstone of Alberta. It is ethically mined from the province's Bearpaw Geological Formation, which is the only place in the world where commercial quantities of gem-quality ammolite are found.
